Love Zones in Kolkutta
Lovers Organisation Voluntary Exhibition (LOVE) in Kolkutta complained that there are not enough areas in the city for courting couples without being disturbed by policemen and passers-by.
It is well-known that the parks in Kolkutta - Victoria Memorial lawns and the Eden Gardens - have a large number of courting couples since early 1960s. However, as the population has exploded, they have provided less privacy to let lovers enjoy each other's company in peace.
LOVE put forward a request to the authorities in Kolkutta (Calcutta) to set up 'love zones' in the city. They appealed to the mayor of the city, Subrata Mukherjee, and succeeded in their request.
Mr Mukherjee says that he sympathises with their plight because couples are often interrupted in their mutual admiration.
He says the culprits include policemen, troublesome children and touts who extort money in return for giving them privacy.
The priority will be given to love zones in the most popular public areas that adjoin the River Ganges, says the Mayor. Love zones are clearly for lovers and not love makers - an important distinction is being made here.
LOVE is happy at this and will now campaign for a public library, a consultancy to be set up for lovers and legal recognition of love letters written during courtship.
