MISSISSAUGA - The South Asians in
Ontario organization (SAO) celebrated India’s 54th Independence Day at
the Sangam Banquet Halls on Aug 19 with a live entertainment, dinner
and dance program. The show was well-attended by over 400 people who
were not dampen by a bad weather.
The event was attended by Hazel McCallion,
Mayor of Mississauga, C.M. Bhandari, Consul General of India, and
Mahaguru Yogi Arka of the Arka Foundation. Other distinguished guests
included Councillor Michael Peru from the City of Toronto, Councillor
Avtar Aujla from the City of Brampton, and Executive Director of Race
Relations and President of the Children’s Breakfast Club, Richard
Gosling. Greetings were extended to the community by Gerry Phillips,
M.P.P., Howard Hampton, Leader of the Ontario NDP. Also other staff
members of the Indian Consulate attended the event.
President of the organization, Sam
Chopra acknowledged the support of his team and the prominent
community members who were in attendance. He also conveyed greetings
for the Pakistani Independence Day to the Pakistani community.
The masters of ceremonies were Neeti
Prakash and Renu Ray of Infinity Broadcasting Inc. The program
started with National Anthems of India & Canada sung by Radhika Ray.
Entertainment featured a Bhangra dance by ‘Shock Punjab Da’, a
patriotic dance choreographed by Ambika Kapoor, the director of the
Natraj Dance Academy, a Kashmiri dance choreographed by Meenu Narwani
of Mahurat Promotions and a Bollywood dance choreographed by Abhinav
Ghai of
Namaste Canada.
Live singing featured glimpses of
singers like Jaya Kitchlu, Tariq Mumtaz, Niraj Handa, Rashmi Anand,
Rajan Sharma, Shveta Sharma, Radhika Ray and the 5-year-old rising
star, Neil Wadhwana. The entertainment was partially provided by
Mahurat Promotions. The evening ended with dinner from Sangam Banquet
Halls and a dance with National DJ. |
