IIT Annual Dinner

Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) at Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Guwahati, Kharagpur and Madras are reputed worldwide for their excellent technical education program.  The graduates from IITs are holding senior management and engineering positions all over North America.  There are over 300 IIT graduates in Ontario contributing to the development of Canada in the hi-tech fields. IIT Engineers are also coming forward to do community service in Canada.  IIT Alumni Canada represented by Surinder Sharma is the Co-Chair of Panorama India for 2001.

IIT Alumni Canada (IITAC) organized their Annual Dinner at The Host on May 26, 2001, which was attended by 250 IITians and their guests.

Mr. Ujjal Mondal, President, IITAC welcomed the guests which included Mr. N.D. Tiwari, former Foreign/Finance/Industry Minister of India and Mr. Jim Karygiannis, MP. 

Chief Guest and Keynote Speaker, Mr. Victor Menezes, Chairman & CEO, Citibank, N.A. gave a presentation on the "Riding the Next Wave" in which Technology and Finance sectors will combine for raising the standards of living of common man.  Victor did his Electrical Engineering from IIT Bombay in 1970 and is on the Board of Indo-American Foundation.

Mr. N.D. Tiwari appreciated the good work done by the IITians in North America and the projects they are taking up back home for India's development and also the positive image they have creating for Indo-Canadians here.  Most of the key positions in the Silicon Valley are held by engineers from the IITs.

Mr. Surinder Sharma, General Secretary of IITAC in his vote of thanks emphasized that IIT graduates are not a "brain drain" on India but a "fixed deposit" which has now started paying dividends for the Motherland.

The program ended with entertainment, music and dance.

IIT Alumni Canada organizes social and cultural events, technical seminars, publishes a newsletter and holds four major functions in the year – Family Picnic, Charity Lunch, Golf Meet and the Annual Dinner. They have also been hosts to visiting professors from IIT Alma maters and have contributed generously to their fund raising efforts. The Board of Directors of IITAC meet often to organize various events. This web site www.iitalumnicanada.com is meant to facilitate dissemination of information among the members.
